Wings Performance Analysis

After 26 games in the 2024-25 BEARD Hockey season, Detroit GM Joe Bubanj takes us on an in-depth analysis of his Red Wings thus far.

Top Offensive Performers:

Artemi Panarin:

Key Stats: 31 points (9 goals, 22 assists), -4 plus/minus, 7.83% shooting, 18:63 average ice time.

Analysis: Panarin continues to lead offensively with a steady increase in both goals and assists. His shooting percentage is 7.83%, showing better finishing ability. His defensive struggles (-4 rating) remain a concern.

Sam Reinhart:

Key Stats: 26 points (15 goals, 11 assists), -12 plus/minus, 13.27% shooting, 22:23 average ice time.

Analysis: Reinhart maintains his goal-scoring prowess but struggles defensively, reflected in his -12 rating.

Elias Lindholm:

Key Stats: 24 points (7 goals, 17 assists), -5 plus/minus, 12.73% shooting, 18:43 average ice time.

Analysis: Lindholm’s playmaking is a key asset, with his assists climbing. However, his defensive metrics (plus/minus) is a concern.

Emerging Contributors:

Philipp Kurashev:

Key Stats: 19 points (10 goals, 9 assists), -4 plus/minus, 15.63% shooting.

Analysis: Kurashev’s offensive consistency continues to shine, and his shooting percentage, while slightly lower than before (16.95%), remains efficient. He’s becoming a key secondary scorer.

Lars Eller:

Key Stats: 18 points (10 goals, 8 assists), +9 plus/minus, 12.99% shooting.

Analysis: Eller’s balance of offense and defense is commendable, with a stable plus/minus and an uptick in goals.

Defensive Anchors:

Torey Krug:

Key Stats: 12 points (1 goal, 11 assists), +3 plus/minus, 21:30 average ice time.

Analysis: Krug continues to contribute modestly on offense while maintaining a solid defensive presence. His consistent ice time reflects his importance to the team's blue line.

Ryan Graves:

Key Stats: 7 points, -19 plus/minus, 24:85 average ice time.

Analysis: Graves’ defensive struggles are evident in his -19 rating, but his high ice time highlights his role as a workhorse defenseman.  Ryan's -19 plus/minus is a concern.

Aaron Ekblad:

Key Stats: 11 points (2 goals, 9 assists), +3 plus/minus, 21:93 average ice time.

Analysis: Ekblad provides steady contributions on both ends of the ice, with a solid plus/minus and significant ice time.

Players Struggling to Contribute:

Erik Brannstrom, Alexandre Texier, and Chase Priskie remain largely ineffective offensively, combining for just two points in 26 games.

Christian Fischer and Kyle MacLean have minimal offensive impact, with no noticeable improvement from last season.

Special Teams and High-Impact Moments:

Sam Reinhart: Continues to dominate on the power play with 10 goals and 20 shots on the man advantage.

Philipp Kurashev and Pierre Engvall: Both have been clutch in key situations, contributing game-winning goals.

Connor Clifton and Ryan Graves: While not offensive threats, they provide durability and physicality, though Clifton’s -16 rating highlights defensive struggles.

Trends and Takeaways:

Consistency Among Top Scorers: Panarin, Reinhart, and Lindholm remain critical offensive players, but their defensive metrics need improvement.

Emerging Depth Scorers: Kurashev and Eller are solidifying their roles as reliable secondary contributors.

Defensive Adjustments Needed: Graves and Clifton, despite their high ice time, both players need to improve their plus/minus metrics to reduce their team’s defensive vulnerabilities.

By addressing defensive lapses and capitalizing on their scoring strengths, the team can maximize its potential moving forward.

Goaltender Performance:

Kaapo Kahkonen:

Games Played: 8

Record: 4-2-1

Save Percentage (SV%): 0.920

Goals Against Average (GAA): 2.96

Shots Faced/Saves: 311 shots faced, 286 saves.

Shutouts: None

Penalty Shots: Saved 1 of 3 attempts (0.571 save percentage).

Time on Ice: 467 minutes (~58 minutes per game).

Analysis: Kahkonen’s save percentage remains elite at 0.920, maintaining his status as a reliable presence in net. His GAA of 2.96 suggests consistent performance, supported by a solid defense. However, his inability to secure a shutout highlights area for improvement in closing out games. His performance under high-pressure penalty shot situations remains modest.

Ilya Sorokin

Games Played: 19

Record: 7-8-4

Save Percentage (SV%): 0.896

Goals Against Average (GAA): 3.36

Shots Faced/Saves: 1124 minutes, 607 shots faced, 544 saves.

Shutouts: 2

Penalty Shots: No penalty shots faced.

Analysis: Sorokin’s numbers need improvement, with his save percentage and his GAA are below league average, his two shutouts indicate the potential for game-stealing performances. However, his win-loss record and workload reflect the challenges posed by a high volume of shots and potentially inconsistent team defense.

Comparative Goaltender Insights

Save Percentage:

Kahkonen’s 0.920 save percentage is significantly higher than Sorokin’s 0.896, underscoring his consistency.

Goals Against Average:

Kahkonen’s GAA of 2.96 is better than Sorokin’s 3.36, further highlighting his steadiness in net.

Workload:

Sorokin has played more than twice as many games and faced almost double the shots as Kahkonen. This increased workload could explain his slightly lower performance metrics.

High-Pressure Moments:

Kahkonen has shown moderate success in penalty-shot situations, while Sorokin has not faced any this season.

Takeaways:

Kaapo Kahkonen: Kahkonen continues to be a dependable option for his team, delivering consistent performances. His stats suggest he’s excelling in his role, albeit in a smaller sample size.

Ilya Sorokin: Despite an underwhelming save percentage, Sorokin’s two shutouts showcase his potential. Improving defensive support could help him regain elite status.

Final Thoughts:

Both goaltenders demonstrate distinct strengths. Kahkonen excels with consistency and efficiency, while Sorokin’s flashes of brilliance show he’s capable of turning games around. For Sorokin to close the gap in performance metrics, a balance between reduced workload and better team play is essential.
